Certification Exams

What are the DELF/DALF exams?
DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi en langue française) are the official French proficiency exams offered by the French government's Centre international d'études pédagogiques (CIEP). The exams evaluate the four French language proficiencies: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Upon your successful completion of the exam, you receive an official, internationally-recognized certification of your French language proficiency.

Why take the DELF/DALF exams?
The key benefit of taking the DELF/DALF exams is to assess and officially certify your French communication skills. This will facilitate enrollment in many international schools by often waiving entry exams. Additionally, the DELF/DALF certification is an internationally-acknowledged prerequisite for many international professional jobs.

Who should take the DELF/DALFexams?
     •  Everybody wanting to validate their skill level in French.
     •  Students of the Alliance Française, at any level, who want to assess

         their language skills.
     •  Students who are seeking admission to the French Grandes Écoles or

French-speaking universities, or who are applying for employment.
     •  Employees who are applying for different positions or seeking promotion.

About the DELF/DALF Certification
The DELF/DALF certification consists of multiple levels. DELF/DALF candidates work to obtain one of six certificates (diplomas):

     •  DELF A1
     •  DELF A2
     •  DELF B1
     •  DELF B2
     •  DALF C1
     •  DALF C2

The six certificates correspond to the six levels of the Cadre européen de référence pour les langues . Each certification level evaluates the four language proficiencies of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The exams are not scored numerically. Rather, the French speaker's proficiency is identified by the highest certificate s/he has obtained. The certificates are independent, so there is no need for you to take all six certification exams. Proficient French speakers can take the higher level exam of their choice. The Alliance Française de Seattle Director of Education is available to help you determine the appropriate exam for you. Please note that DELF junior exams are available for adolescents. For more details about the DELF/DALF certifications, including descriptions of the exams in each unit, sample topics; and information about centers, schedules, and fees, please visit the official DELF/DALF website.

How does someone prepare for the DELF/DALF exams?
There is no official DELF/DALF preparation class. However, Alliance courses based on the AF FRAMES standards will help you to achieve the skills necessary to pass the DELF/DALF exams. Some preparation workshops are available from time to time. Information about correspondence courses for DELF/DALF preparation is available at the Centre national d'enseignement distance (CNED) website.
