Art and fashion historian, Laurent Cotta, is responsible for contemporary creation at Galliera, the museum of fashion in Paris. He will introduce you to the '' last great couturier" according to Yves Saint-Laurent himself and at the same time to the culture and design in the second half of the XXth century in France
Towards the end of his life, Yves Saint Laurent defined himself as “the last great couturier” – perhaps a way to settle scores with his long-time rival, Karl Lagerfeld. Pride, lucidity…? Before the end of his career in 2002, he was certainly the last active couturier to have lived through the period of glory of Parisian design in the 1950s. He was also the only one to have been able to maintain the same number of design studios and employees as in the hey-day of the ‘50s throughout his entire career.
Recognized by Chanel as her heir, taking after a classicism inscribed in the French tradition, he offered an understated fashion which glorified the woman, gave her the assurance that she needed to assert herself in this transitional period.
He was the first to introduce street fashion into haute couture. It was this audacity that catapulted him to the head of Dior in 1960, with the “Beatnik” collection.
Although he was the champion of haute couture, he nevertheless designed a ready-to-wear line, Rive Gauche, in 1966, also signing all of his designs.
From the start of his career, he rendered the concept of “Parisian elegance” obsolete, and replaced it by the idea of “seduction” which was more in line with the aspirations of women at the dawn of the 1960s. This form of seduction was all the more disconcerting in that he deliberately conceived of it as poisonous, as witnessed by his 1971 collection, inspired by the 1940s or Catherine Deneuve’s outfits in Belle de jour by Bunuel in 1967.
Through his classics – the safari jacket, the tuxedo, see-through clothes – he accompanied women in their emancipation and fashioned a clothes-closet that is contemporary even to this day.

Saada recieved classical training in Avignon, and continued his studies with Michel Petrucciani, Daniel Goyone and Serge Forté. Through his involvement with a wide variety of musical projects, Saada broadened his musical horizons beyond the classical. After touring South America, he recently performed in various renowned clubs in Paris as well as in the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. His earlier album “Eveil” recorded in trio with Chris Jennings and David Eleouet has been on the play lists of Air France flights.
When reviewing Saada’s recent solo album“Present”, renowned pianist and composer Roque Alsina states “This brilliant and inspired musician and improviser introduces us to a dense yet delicate universe converging a rare pianistic discussion of harmonic beauty”.

Rémy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Rémy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely - and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Rémy's passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting "rat race" that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Ball Room at the Alliance Française/Good Shepherd Center

The Alliance is proud to welcome author Cara Black on her book tour to promote her latest novel "Murder in Passy". This is book eleven of her well known and beloved Aimée Leduc Investigation series. Her half-French, half-American protagonist is a private investigator with a penchant for chic vintage clothing and dangerous men.
Black, Cara. Murder in Passy. Soho Crime. Mar. 2011. c.288p. ISBN 978-1-56947-882-0. $25. M
Proprietor of a computer security business in Paris and protagonist of Black's atmospheric series (yes, you can feel the Seine-soaked cobblestones through your feet as your read), smart, tough, and utterly likable Aimée Leduc admits to a penchant for bad boys. Aside from her partner, René, the one male constant in her life is her godfather, Morbier, commissaire of police. So when Morbier asks her to check in on his lady friend, Xavierre, who's planning her daughter's wedding and who's seemed distant lately, Aimée agrees. No, Xavierre is not very obliging when Aimée crashes a prewedding party at her elegant Passy mansion. Then Xavierre ends up strangled with her own scarf—and Morbier, implicated in her death, winds up in jail. Aimée immediately starts digging and discovers that Basque-born Xavierre's long-ago connection to the separatist group ETA has returned to haunt her and that a radical ETA offshoot called Euskadi Action has serious plans about some French Basque prisoners and an upcoming referendum. Soon, Aimée needs to rescue not only Morbier but a kidnapped Spanish princess. Verdict Another fun, absorbing, well-plotted Aimée Leduc mystery, more brisk in the telling than ever; your passport to Paris next spring.—Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

Belgian actress Yolande Moreau headlines this biopic, starring as a little-known but uncommonly brilliant painter. Frenchwoman Séraphine Louis, aka Séraphine de Senlis, lived from 1864 to 1942. Though ostensibly a shepherdess and housekeeper whose chief duties involved cooking, cleaning, and ironing, in her off-hours Séraphine joyously turned to natural elements of the outdoor world, with which she felt a tremendous degree of emotional and spiritual communion. Séraphine channeled these undying passions through painting, and, having only the scantest materials at hand, created paints from elements such as animal blood, oil from church candles, and dirt pulled from the ground. With these crude and raw tools, the nascent, budding artist created tableaux of floral arrangements utterly unlike any seen before. Sadly, those around Séraphine perceived the paintings as coarse and unimpressive -- something of a joke. Her life took a most fantastic turn, then, when Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic, turned up in Senlis -- and laid eyes on the young woman's creations for the first time. Yet, despite the success that Uhde brought to Séraphine, a sad future still lay ahead for the young woman -- one accompanied by continued obscurity and emotional isolation. Won best actress with National Society of Film Critics in 2009.

The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra bets against the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar, that her people are still great, even if the times of the Pharaohs has long passed. She vows (against all logic) to build a new palace for Caesar within three months. Since all her architects are either busy otherwise or too conservative in style, this ambivalent honor falls to Edifis. He is to build the palace and be covered in gold or, if not, his fate is to be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis calls upon an old friend to help him out: The fabulous Druid Getafix from Gaul, who brews a fantastic potion that gives supernatural strength. In order to help and protect the old Druid, Asterix and Obelix accompany him on his journey to Egypt. When Julius Caesar gets wind of the project succeeding, he has the building site attacked by his troops in order to win the bet and not lose face. But just like the local pirates, he hasn't counted on Asterix and Obelix.
