General French Classes are textbook-based courses offering a complete study of the language (oral and written expression and comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, etc). Learning pace: 1.5h x 2 weekly plus homework; the Saturday classes are 2.5h weekly. General French courses take place over 10 weeks. There are a few hybrid classes offering 20 hours of synchronous classes ("live" on Zoom) and 10 hours of asynchronous learning (self-study on the e-learning platform). Each level comprises three classes (e.g. A1.1, A1.2, A1.3, etc.).

AFSeattle is following King County Public Health recommendations; at this time, masks are optional for in-person programs.

A1.1 is the first course of the level A1 (Beginner), which comprises courses A1.1, A1.2, and A1.3. During the three A1 general French courses, the students will learn to interact in a simple way, to ask and answer simple questions about themselves, and to initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.
• Prerequisite: None. This class is for complete beginners. If you have any prior exposure to French, please take a placement test: https://www.afseattle.org/placement-tests/
• Textbook (not included in tuition): “Entre nous 1” that covers the whole A1 level, https://www.afseattle.org/store/
• Content of the A1.1 course: chapters 1 to 3—alphabet and numbers, basic vocabulary for the classroom, introduce and describe oneself (nationality, profession), situate people and places, etc.

Objectives of level A1:
- understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
- introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they have.
- interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
