Make French Crêpes in this experiential Workshop! 

Travel to Brittany, this beautiful region of the West of France for an evening, through the art of crêpe-making and the opinions of a proud Breton. We’ll talk about the geography, the culture, the traditions of the region. We’ll also learn how to make its most famous dish, “La crêpe”, its toppings, through a demonstration and sampling.  Great for beginners. You will learn 10 new words and expressions, essential for your trip to Brittany. 

This class is taught by Emma Le Du, a French native from Brittany. Crêpes and galettes are a long-rooted geographic and family tradition which represent the authenticity and excellence of the region. Emma is passionate about finding the essence of things,  particularly as it relates to sense of place and group dynamics. That’s what she loves about being a tour guide to Brittany. When not in Brittany, Emma resides in the Pacific Northwest. When not teaching, she runs a non profit (TINFA), empowering teachers through technology and collaboration in under-served areas of Latin America. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Each week, a theme will be explored through a reading and/or listening exercise appropriate to the level. Relevant vocabulary and one or more grammar points at the A2 level will be reviewed based on support materials and put into practice through structured activities designed to generate authentic conversation, including role playing, presentations, discussions, games, etc. 

Throughout the course, students will receive personalized and prompt feedback from their instructor on grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and pronunciation. A2+ learners are expected to communicate in a simple manner on familiar topics about their background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need; they can generally identify the topic of a discussion which is conducted simply and clearly as a direct exchange of information. No textbook required for this course.

This engaging workshop uses Édith Piaf's iconic anthem as a springboard to explore the full spectrum of French negation. Students will move beyond basic negation to master the subtle art of saying "no" in French - from the emphatic "ne...jamais" to the restrictive "ne...que," and the sophisticated "ne...guère." Through the lens of Piaf's defiant lyrics, they will discover how negation shapes meaning, tone, and idiomatic expressions.

Welcome to our workshop series Voyages Extraordinaires! 

This workshop invites you on an extraordinary journey through the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Discover this fascinating and contrasting land as we examine multiple aspects of it's culture. 

Starting with its history, we see how many different influences over time bring a somewhat cyclical nature to governmental events and bring us into the present. In arts and language, we will see how the DRC's music scene is known throughout Africa and around the world, and how language defines interactions as French is used in schools and government, and personal communications are held in either Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and/or Tshiluba. Lastly, we will see how the lands' abundance of natural resources and unique biodiversity impacts their economic growth.  

During this workshop, we will travel through this true earthly paradise, enriching your vocabulary with words and expressions related to rare minerals, animal and plant species, and local culture. You will get to experience the principles of linguistic immersion, Congolese style, as we explore this country of a thousand wonders.

In this course, students will  read a selection of texts from Fables de la Fontaine. Jean de La Fontaine's Fables are a classic collection of 239 moral tales in verse, published between 1668 and 1694, that adapt traditional stories (from Aesop, India, etc.) into witty, satirical French poetry, using animal characters to comment on human nature, society, and politics, making them beloved by all ages for their humor and irony.

Make French Crêpes in this experiential Workshop! 

Travel to Brittany, this beautiful region of the West of France for an evening, through the art of crêpe-making and the opinions of a proud Breton. We’ll talk about the geography, the culture, the traditions of the region. We’ll also learn how to make its most famous dish, “La crêpe”, its toppings, through a demonstration and sampling.  Great for beginners. You will learn 10 new words and expressions, essential for your trip to Brittany. 

This class is taught by Emma Le Du, a French native from Brittany. Crêpes and galettes are a long-rooted geographic and family tradition which represent the authenticity and excellence of the region. Emma is passionate about finding the essence of things,  particularly as it relates to sense of place and group dynamics. That’s what she loves about being a tour guide to Brittany. When not in Brittany, Emma resides in the Pacific Northwest. When not teaching, she runs a non profit (TINFA), empowering teachers through technology and collaboration in under-served areas of Latin America. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

This engaging workshop uses Édith Piaf's iconic anthem as a springboard to explore the full spectrum of French negation. Students will move beyond basic negation to master the subtle art of saying "no" in French - from the emphatic "ne...jamais" to the restrictive "ne...que," and the sophisticated "ne...guère." Through the lens of Piaf's defiant lyrics, they will discover how negation shapes meaning, tone, and idiomatic expressions.

In this course focused on oral expression and listening comprehension, students will listen to podcasts and speculate together on subjects worthy of greater debate. The instructor will guide a discussion of current events, including important moments that characterize the Anthropocene and its drifts. Students will also discuss topics related to science, societies, fauna and flora, and arts and culture, amongst others. These subjects will allow the class to reflect on and discuss the various stakes which constitute our current society. All course materials will be provided by the instructor

Dive into the world of French writing by studying the texts of Maupassant. Read and discuss these famous works as we explore the themes of hunger in 19th century French culture. This class will strengthen reading skills, literary interpretation, the ability to follow themes throughout a work, as well as oral communication to express and discuss the chosen theme.

Welcome to our workshop series Voyages Extraordinaires! 

This workshop invites you on an extraordinary journey through the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Discover this fascinating and contrasting land as we examine multiple aspects of it's culture. 

Starting with its history, we see how many different influences over time bring a somewhat cyclical nature to governmental events and bring us into the present. In arts and language, we will see how the DRC's music scene is known throughout Africa and around the world, and how language defines interactions as French is used in schools and government, and personal communications are held in either Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and/or Tshiluba. Lastly, we will see how the lands' abundance of natural resources and unique biodiversity impacts their economic growth.  

During this workshop, we will travel through this true earthly paradise, enriching your vocabulary with words and expressions related to rare minerals, animal and plant species, and local culture. You will get to experience the principles of linguistic immersion, Congolese style, as we explore this country of a thousand wonders.

In this course, students will  read a selection of texts from Fables de la Fontaine. Jean de La Fontaine's Fables are a classic collection of 239 moral tales in verse, published between 1668 and 1694, that adapt traditional stories (from Aesop, India, etc.) into witty, satirical French poetry, using animal characters to comment on human nature, society, and politics, making them beloved by all ages for their humor and irony.

Make French Crêpes in this experiential Workshop! 

Travel to Brittany, this beautiful region of the West of France for an evening, through the art of crêpe-making and the opinions of a proud Breton. We’ll talk about the geography, the culture, the traditions of the region. We’ll also learn how to make its most famous dish, “La crêpe”, its toppings, through a demonstration and sampling.  Great for beginners. You will learn 10 new words and expressions, essential for your trip to Brittany. 

This class is taught by Emma Le Du, a French native from Brittany. Crêpes and galettes are a long-rooted geographic and family tradition which represent the authenticity and excellence of the region. Emma is passionate about finding the essence of things,  particularly as it relates to sense of place and group dynamics. That’s what she loves about being a tour guide to Brittany. When not in Brittany, Emma resides in the Pacific Northwest. When not teaching, she runs a non profit (TINFA), empowering teachers through technology and collaboration in under-served areas of Latin America. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

French Cinema B2+: Polars: Le Corbeau, Voici le temps des assassins, Compartiment tueurs

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.

This course explores the French polar (crime thriller) as a conduit for examining sociological and political undercurrents in French society. Through a fatalist vision of corruption and social decay, we will trace the evolution of this genre from the claustrophobic paranoia of early film noir to the stylized tension of the 1950s. We will start with Henri-Georges Clouzot’s masterpiece of suspicion, Le Corbeau (1943), move to the gritty underworld of Julien Duvivier’s Voici le temps des assassins (1956) starring Jean Gabin, and conclude with the fast-paced, modern police procedural of Costa-Gavras’ Compartiment tueurs (1965).

We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the periods and artists depicted in each film.
