TEF Certification


What to expect

  • New exam dates are released about every three months. 
  • TEF sessions are available most Fridays with up to four (4) candidates at a time on most dates.
    • Reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and written production are done on a computer.
    • Oral production consists of an interview with one of our accredited examiners.
  • Please read our TEF policies carefully before registering.
  • To register, please select a date below and follow the registration procedure. The price will vary depending on the type of TEF you select in the registration form.
  • You may retake the test multiple times, provided there is a 20-day waiting period between registrations.
  • Requests for accommodations need to be submitted at least two (2) weeks before the exam date. Please email info@afseattle.org with a certificate from a medical doctor detailing your disability and required accommodations. 
  • Due to limited availability, TEF exam registrations are limited to two (2) per candidate per exam session release period. This policy is in place to ensure fair access for all individuals who require the exam. If you have already registered, please do not attempt to register again until you have received your test results.

TEF Canada

Test d'évaluation de français Canada: for those wishing to emigrate to Canada.

The Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) of the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry is an international benchmark test that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French. The TEF Canada Immigration is specific to those wishing to immigrate to Canada.

Written comprehension, oral comprehension, written expression, and oral expression modules (approx. 3.5 hours)

Levels: A1 to C2

Certificate: Sent by email approx. 1-10 days after exam. Valid 2 years.

Price: $365 (4 modules included)

TEF IRN - Naturalisation

Test d'évaluation de français IRN: for those wishing to emigrate to France.

The TEF pour l'intégration, la résidence et la nationalité (IRN) is specific to those who wish to obtain French citizenship or a resident card.

  • Naturalization: Level B2 required
  • Resident Card: Level B1 required
  • Multi-year Residence Permit: Level A2 required

Levels: A1 to B2

Certificate: Sent by email approx. 1-10 days after exam. Valid 2 years

Price: $330 (4 modules included)

TEF Études

Test d'évaluation de français: for those who wish to integrate a school/university in France or in a French-speaking country.

The Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is an international benchmark test that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French.

There are five (5) modules to choose from: written comprehension, oral comprehension, vocabulary & syntax, written expression, and oral expression (approx. 4 hours for all 5 modules).

Levels: A1 to C2

Certificate: Sent by email approx. 1-10 days after exam. Valid 2 years

Price: $94 per module selected (à la carte)

TEFAQ (Full or Electives)

Test d'évaluation de français Québec: for those wishing to emigrate to Québec.

TEF Québec (TEFAQ) is specific to those wishing to emigrate to Québec. Primary applicants must complete the Full examination, while non-primary applicants must complete Electives only.

Electives: Oral comprehension, oral expression (approx. 1.5 hours)

Levels: A1 to C2
