A Romanian Composer in Paris: Enescu's Legacy

-
Good Shepherd Center

Join us to celebrate le Mois de la Francophonie through a language that transcends borders: music.

Shaped by his formative years in Paris, George Enescu’s music reflects a rare synthesis of French elegance and Romanian masterful versatility. A Romanian Composer in Paris: Enescu's Legacy explores this rich artistic dialogue through Enescu’s writing for violin and piano.

Educated at the Paris Conservatoire and immersed in the vibrant musical life of the French capital, Enescu absorbed the influence of Fauré, Massenet, and the emerging modernism of the turn of the twentieth century. Yet his music never loses its distinctive identity: folk-inflected melodies, rhythmic vitality, and a profound emotional depth remain at its core.

Kevin Matheson (violin) and Tim Fuller (piano) have curated a program featuring Enescu's key works, and pieces that influenced his compositional voice, such as Maurice Ravel's 1st violin sonata.

Kevin Matheson

Award-winning violinist Kevin Matheson made his solo debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall and has performed with orchestras including Orchestra Manhattan and the Tahoe Philharmonic. A prolific recording artist for the Cicerone label, he also gained critical acclaim touring Japan and the U.S. with the Matheson Duo. Kevin currently serves as concertmaster of the Orchestra of Virginia’s Blue Ridge, an Adjunct Instructor at Hollins University, and tours with his trio for the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Tim Fuller

Tim Fuller studied piano and ethnomusicology at Oberlin and at Wesleyan University. In his twenties, after a series of solo and chamber music recitals, tendinitis forced him to give up the piano. Thirty years later, he taught himself to play without pain and is now active as a collaborative pianist in Seattle, Washington. He has danced with the Romanian folk ensemble, Datina, and with Radost, an Eastern European folk ensemble.
