Barbe bleue by Amélie Nothomb

SUM24 - French Cinema B2+
This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.
French Cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical, sociological, or political—embodied by actors on film. This quarter, we’ll study three (relatively) newly released films. They each uniquely explore healing, from events that were both physically and emotionally traumatic. First, there’s healing from an accident of our own making. This is often a singular journey. We’ll observe Jean Dujardin on this inner voyage of redemption across France in Denis Imbert’s Sur les Chemins noirs (2023). Next, in Yvan Attal’s Les Choses Humaines (2021), we’ll attempt to discern healing from a declared and contested traumatic event in a very public setting: the courtroom. Lastly, we’ll see if the rehabilitation part France’s justice system helps heal both victims and perpetrators of crimes in the powerful film: Je verrai toujours vos visages de Jeanne Herry (2023).
We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.
Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the period each film exploded in the world of French cinéma.

Embark on a captivating journey through the vibrant and eclectic world of artistic expression in the "Paris of Artists." This immersive
course invites participants to explore the City of Light as a haven for painters, performers, and visionaries alike.
Across two sessions we will delve into the lives, works, and enduring legacies of iconic figures such as Josephine Baker, whose
electrifying performances ignited the stages of Montmartre and captivated audiences worldwide. From the avant-garde experimentation of
surrealists like René Magritte to the bold brushstrokes of impressionist masters like Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, participants will
unravel the diverse influences and groundbreaking movements that have shaped Paris as a crucible of artistic innovation.
Through engaging discussions students will gain insight into the unique contributions of these visionary creators, while also exploring the
dynamic intersections between art, society, and cultural identity in the Parisian landscape.
All materials will be provided by the instructor before and during class via the Apolearn platform.

SUM24 - Oral Communication C1
Each week, a theme will be explored through a reading and/or listening exercise appropriate to the level. Relevant vocabulary and one or more grammar points at the C1 level will be reviewed based on support materials and put into practice through structured activities designed to generate authentic conversation, including role playing, presentations, discussions, games, etc.
Throughout the course, students will receive personalized and prompt feedback from their instructor on grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and pronunciation. C1 learners are expected to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible. This is a class in which you will express opinions on current affairs, as well as socio-cultural subjects, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options, develop an argument giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view; and speculate about causes and consequences.
Prerequisite: General French B2.3 completed, or B2.3/C1 result at our placement test.
Pace: Regular, 5 weeks, 1h30 once a week, total of 7.5h
