Get ready for the festive season by revisiting a French fairy tale classic,  "Beauty and the Beast/ La Belle et la Bête". Students will read an abbreviated version of the 18th-century text by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, and will analyze the themes of love, transformation, and societal values embedded in the story. This course enhances language acquisition through reading, listening, conversational fluency and pronunciation skills.

This class will review essential vocabulary and oral communication skills at the A1+ level but with a fun holiday twist!  You'll learn how to pronounce and use key vocabulary and phrases for authentic cultural experiences with a focus on the winter holidays and joy!  

Prerequisite: for students who have completed the entire A1 level (A1.1, A1.2 and A1.3), an Intensive A1 Review course or received A2.1 at placement test. See our level progression guide here

This class will strengthen all aspects of oral communication at the A2 level but with a fun holiday twist! You will explore themes of winter holidays and activities while sharpening A2 level skills.   

This class is designed for students who are at the end of the A2 level and who wish to strengthen and practice their oral comprehension and production skills through a communicative and action-oriented approach to language learning. Some written comprehension and production may be introduced in support of the targeted oral communication outcomes. 

Each week, a theme will be explored through a reading and/or listening exercise appropriate to the level. Relevant vocabulary and one or more grammar points at the A2 level will be reviewed based on support materials and put into practice through structured activities designed to generate authentic conversation, including role playing, presentations, discussions, games, etc. 

Throughout the course, students will receive personalized and prompt feedback from their instructor on grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and pronunciation. A2+ learners are expected to communicate in a simple manner on familiar topics about their background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need; they can generally identify the topic of a discussion which is conducted simply and clearly as a direct exchange of information.

With a comparative analysis of French and English, and through an authentic and cultural approach, these 3 workshops will provide keys to become aware of deceptive cognates and common mistakes in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.   

Part 1 will focus on Grammar.

Fall25 - French Cinema: L'Assassinat du Père Noël B2+

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.  

French cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical, sociological, or political—embodied by actors on film. We’ll contemplate many topics raised in these films and read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.  

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the period each film exploded in the world of French cinéma. No textbook required for this course.

In this 3-part workshop, through a combination of interactive language lessons and gastronomic discussions, students will elevate their language skills while discovering the secrets behind classic French gastronomy. You will build upon your advanced language foundation by engaging in nuanced conversations about food, wine, and culinary experiences; and enhance your vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension while exploring gastronomic literature and resources.

Prerequisite: any General French B2.1 and B2.2 -level class, or a B2.2 result at our placement test.

Fall25 - Le Paris de la Belle Epoque B2+ (FALL 2)

Workshops

This course delves into the Belle Époque (1871–1914), a pivotal period of peace, progress, and cultural brilliance in Paris. From the rise of Haussmannian architecture and electrification to the universal expositions and the construction of the Eiffel Tower, students will explore how Paris became the cultural capital of Europe. Through the study of key figures such as Sarah Bernhardt, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Camille Claudel, among others, as well as period art, songs, posters, or press excerpts, learners will analyze, comment and discuss the social, artistic, and technological transformations that defined this golden age. 

Part 2: Montmartre, Cabarets, and the Artistic Explosion (1900–1914). The second part of this workshop immerses students in the bohemian atmosphere of early 20th-century Montmartre, with its famed cabarets (Le Chat Noir, Moulin Rouge), chansonniers, actresses, and avant-garde painters. Through the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and literary voices such as Colette and Sarah Bernhardt, students will examine how Paris became a hub of artistic innovation while also confronting the era’s stark social contrasts between Parisian glamour and working-class hardship.

Each week, through a study in areas such as politics and economics, literature and history, the arts, and many more, students will have the opportunity to practice and strengthen their linguistic skills in the language, review grammatical concepts, and develop their cultural understanding of France and the francophone world.

A class for fluent students wishing to perfect their linguistic and cultural understanding in areas such as geopolitics and economics, literature and history, the arts, and many more. Students will focus on formulating ideas and opinions with precision and on discussing clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects. 

Course materials—including newspaper articles, TV, and radio shows—are to be studied before class; expect approximately two hours of autonomous study per week. 

Prerequisite: Both former and current AFSeattle students, as well as all new students, must take our online placement test and complete an oral assessment to confirm their level prior to enrolling in their first C1 level course.
