language skills while discovering the secrets behind classic French gastronomy. You will build upon your advanced language foundation by
engaging in nuanced conversations about food, wine, and culinary experiences; and enhance your vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension while

This course delves into the Belle Époque (1871–1914), a pivotal period of peace, progress, and cultural brilliance in Paris. From the rise
of Haussmannian architecture and electrification to the universal expositions and the construction of the Eiffel Tower, students will
explore how Paris became the cultural capital of Europe. Through the study of key figures such as Sarah Bernhardt, Toulouse-Lautrec, and
Camille Claudel, among others, as well as period art, songs, posters, or press excerpts, learners will analyze, comment and discuss the
social, artistic, and technological transformations that defined this golden age.
Part 2: Montmartre, Cabarets, and the Artistic Explosion (1900–1914). The second part of this workshop immerses students in the bohemian
atmosphere of early 20th-century Montmartre, with its famed cabarets (Le Chat Noir, Moulin Rouge), chansonniers, actresses, and avant-garde
painters. Through the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and literary voices such as Colette and Sarah Bernhardt, students will examine how Paris
became a hub of artistic innovation while also confronting the era’s stark social contrasts between Parisian glamour and working-class
hardship.

En Attendant Godot by Samuel Beckett
Samuel Beckett, Lettre à Michel Polac, janvier 1952

Memoirs of Hadrian by Marquerite Yourcenar
You can purchase the book here:[https://amzn.to/3LBs7WH] In this course, students will read La Place de L'Etoile by Patrick Modiano

Le Rocher de Tanios by Amin Maalouf
Prix Goncourt 1993.
Or, ce

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students
will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural
literacy.
French Cinéma is also a conduit to explore French culture— sociological, or political—through stories captured on
film. This quarter we’ll explore the genre of the ‘polar’ in French cinéma, which means we’ll be studying
the underbelly of society and the characters that inhabit it. This fatalist vision of a corrupt society is integral to the
‘polar’ genre and demonstrated perfectly in our three films. We’ll begin this quarter with a classic of French Cinéma Jacques
Becker’s Touchez pas au grisbi (1954), and then continue with two more recent examples of the
genre, first, Stéphane Demoustier’s ‘carceral polar’: Borgo (2023), and then Alain Guiraudie’s
‘peculiar and biting polar’: Miséricorde (2024).
We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.
Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the periods and artists depicted in each film. No
textbook required for this course

We are immediately plunged into the hallucinatory imagination of Raphaël Schlemilovitch, a young Jewish man, torn between
self-aggrandisement and self-loathing, who may be the heir to a Venezuelan fortune, may have lived during the Nazi Occupation, may have
rubbed shoulders with the most notorious collaborators and anti-Semites of the time, may even have been the lover of Eva Braun… or he may
have been none of these things.
But at the centre of this vortex is ‘La Place de l’Étoile’ – the Place of the Star – which is both the geographical and moral centre of
Paris, and that place next the heart where French Jews were compelled to wear the yellow star, the symbol of their persecution.
