Fall26 - Introduction to French Surrealism B1 (Fall 2)

Specialized French

Have you ever seen a piece of surrealist art? Would you like to gain a better understanding of this style and historic art movement? Would you like to try your hand at writing some surrealist poetry with a guide?

Surrealism was clearly more than just an art movement, as many of its members were deeply involved in opposing wars and French colonialism. In fact, André Breton, author of the *Surrealist Manifesto*, left Paris to visit Martinique and write poetry there. In this course, we will read and study seminal surrealist texts and poetry spanning Paris and the Caribbean. Starting with Breton and his two manifestos, we will analyze the works of Aimé and Suzanne Césaire while exploring techniques such as "automatic writing."

Join us in the Fall 1 and/or Fall 3 sessions for the complete course, or attend this session as a standalone.

Prerequisite: for students currently taking any B1-level classes (B1.1, B1.2, B1.3) or who received a placement of B1.1, B1.2, or B1.3 on the Level Assessment. See our level progression guide on this page.

Fall26 - Non je ne regrette rien: Mastering French negation B1/B2

Workshops

This engaging workshop uses Édith Piaf's iconic anthem as a springboard to explore the full spectrum of French negation. Students will move beyond basic negation to master the subtle art of saying "no" in French - from the emphatic "ne...jamais" to the restrictive "ne...que," and the sophisticated "ne...guère." Through the lens of Piaf's defiant lyrics, they will discover how negation shapes meaning, tone, and  idiomatic expressions.

What You'll Learn:

  • Complex negative structures (ne...plus, ne...jamais, ne...rien, ne...personne, ne...aucun) and their subtle distinctions
  • Double negations and their nuances
  • The disappearing "ne" in spoken French vs. formal registers
  • Essential idiomatic expressions: from everyday phrases like "Il n'y a pas de quoi" and "Ça ne fait rien" to colorful expressions like "Ne pas casser trois pattes à un canard" and "Ne pas avoir froid aux yeux"

Perfect for students ready to add sophistication and authenticity to their French expression!

Le Misanthrope by Molière

The Misanthrope follows Alceste, a man who condemns the dishonesty and hypocrisy he sees in society while often failing to recognize his own flaws. In love with the flirtatious Célimène, he encounters a range of characters whose behavior he strongly disapproves of. Through the setting of a fashionable Parisian salon, Molière critiques the ambition, vanity, and cynicism of his time. While Alceste's refusal to accept lies and social pretenses can seem admirable, his rigid ideals also place him in conflict with the world around him. The Misanthrope is considered one of Molière's most complex plays because it captures the contradictions of both human nature and society.

Les Mots by Jean-Paul Sartre

Workshops

This 3-part workshop series explores the short film 14e arrondissement by Alexander Payne, from the 2006 anthology Paris, je 'aime. Follow Carole, a mailwoman from Denver, Colorado in her discovery of Paris 14th arrondissement to identify English speakers' difficulties in speaking French. With a comparative analysis of French and English, and through an authentic and cultural approach, these 3 workshops will provide keys to become aware of deceptive cognates and common mistakes in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

Part 3 will focus on Pronunciation. You may sign up for one, two, or all three parts of the series! Members get 10% off any additional course in the same term.

This workshop will be conducted in French. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Prerequisite: This workshop is for B1, B2 and C1 students. Students must have completed General French A2.3 or higher, an A2+ Specialized French class or higher, or received at least B1.1 on the Level Assessment. See our level progression guide on this page.

Fall26 - Voyages Extraordinaires: Le Congo (RDC) B1/B2/C1

Workshops

Welcome to our workshop series Voyages Extraordinaires!

This workshop invites you on an extraordinary journey through the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One of the largest countries in Africa and centrally located in the heart of the continent. Discover this fascinating and contrasting land as we examine multiple aspects of its culture.

Starting with its history, we see how many different influences over time bring a somewhat cyclical nature to governmental events and bring us into the present. In arts and language, we will see how the DRC's music scene is known throughout Africa and around the world, and how language defines interactions as French is used in schools and government, and personal communications are held in either Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and/or Tshiluba. Lastly, we will see how the lands' abundance of natural resources and unique biodiversity impacts their economic growth.

During this workshop, we will travel through this true earthly paradise, enriching your vocabulary with words and expressions related to rare minerals, animal and plant species, and local culture. You will get to experience the principles of linguistic immersion, Congolese style, as we explore this country of a thousand wonders.

This workshop will be conducted in French. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Prerequisite: This workshop is for B1 and B2, and C1 students. Students must have completed General French A2.3 or higher, an A2+ Specialized French class or higher, or received at least B1.1 on the  Level Assessment. See our level progression guide on this page.
