Note: The second French Cinéma class is also a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through films students will enhance their knowledge of spoken informal French as well as their French cultural literacy.

French Cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical or psychological—embodied by actors on film. In the second course this quarter, we’ll continue with another classic French film, Alain Resnais’s Mon oncle d’Amérique (1980) starring Gérard Depardieu. This unique film tells three distinct yet interdependent stories alongside a lecture given by the professor Henri Laborit, himself, on his theories on human behavior. Perhaps these character-studies illustrate Professor Laborit’s theories. Perhaps not…

We will read excerpts from contemporaneous articles on Mon oncle d’Amérique, as well as excerpts from Resnais’s own writings on his life and work.

Lastly, we’ll listen to and study songs from the film or on the themes presented therein.
