Coeur d’amande by Yasmina Khadra.

Le Misanthrope by Molière

The Misanthrope follows Alceste, a man who condemns the dishonesty and hypocrisy he sees in society while often failing to recognize his own flaws. In love with the flirtatious Célimène, he encounters a range of characters whose behavior he strongly disapproves of. Through the setting of a fashionable Parisian salon, Molière critiques the ambition, vanity, and cynicism of his time. While Alceste's refusal to accept lies and social pretenses can seem admirable, his rigid ideals also place him in conflict with the world around him. The Misanthrope is considered one of Molière's most complex plays because it captures the contradictions of both human nature and society.

Les Mots by Jean-Paul Sartre

Hiver 1843.

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.

This course explores the many faces of love in French cinema through three acclaimed films spanning four decades. Through close analysis of dialogue, character, and cinematic style, we will consider how these films challenge conventional ideas about romance while inviting us to reflect on the complexities of human relationships.

We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.

Workshops

Join us for an engaging 2-hour workshop on the French conditional mood (le Conditionnel), where you'll review and deepen this essential aspect of French grammar through interactive learning and practical exercises. We'll explore how to form and use the conditional to express hypothetical situations, make polite requests, and discuss possibilities in French, using real-world examples from current news headlines and classic French songs.

Through a blend of structured instruction and hands-on practice, including analysis of conditional usage in memorable songs like Jean-Jacques Goldman's "Si je t'aime", Angèle's "Oui ou Non" and Stromae's "Tous les Mêmes", you'll develop confidence in using this tense in both written and spoken French.

The workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced learners who already have basic knowledge of the conditional, and includes comprehensive materials to support your learning journey. By the end of the session, you'll have a solid understanding of when and how to use the conditional tense, enhancing your ability to communicate more naturally and effectively in French. All materials will be provided by the instructor.
